This morning (April 11, 2010) I am looking towards First. Not much action so far, but I'm sure the day will bring something exciting.

Last week was busy around town. The big news is that several of the streets were graded.

Ah....you don't even need shocks now.....very nice ride!

Howie has been working very hard on this effort for over three years. Along with Tom Smith, who contributed his talents and a few other dedicated folks, this has turned into a wonderful addition to the food supply in SJ.

Imagine, fresh onions, carrots, tomatoes, beets, beans, spinach, corn, radishes and various types of lettuces...all grown locally.

Here, Angie shows off some of the beans that were harvested this morning.

What a bounty of fresh vegetables! As this is a 'Cooperative Garden Effort', it is supported by a few, 'major patrons' and some of the local residents.

The yearly fee to participate is $100. USD per couple or $50. USD for a single. Each bag is 50 pesos for members, 70 pesos for non-members, but non-members are not guaranteed that any vegetables will be available. Everyone is encouraged to use only what they need for the week. This is not a new concept; check out the following link;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_gardening, but a very unique effort here in Baja Sur.

Who ever thought you'd get excited over spinach? I use to hate it growing up. If you lived here full-time you'd really appreciate fresh spinach for sure!

This is the 1st toll station going south on Baja Hwy 1 south of Tijuana. This picture was taken on Mar. 13, 2010. Not too busy here.....but crossing into Baja from San Diego at San Yisdro took us 45 minutes. Of course it was the weekend and now they are stopping and inspecting more vehicles going south.

There are still quite a few building projects along the coast south of Tijuana. Some look abandoned but others look like they are still being worked on....it was kinda hard to tell one from the other.

Rio de Janero? No Baja.
Six years ago, 2002, a Baja California man, Antonio Pequeño Guerrero, commissioned a monumental statue as a testament to his faith in Jesus Christ.
The first piece, the head, was constructed by workers in Tijuana, then moved to Rosarito, where three other parts were built. The head, chest and arms were made of steel; the lower body of fiberglass.
Workers assembled the pieces and used a crane to hoist the figure onto a cupola carved out of a hill.
The figure of Christ is 75 1/2 feet tall and weighs 40 tons. It can be seen by those who live or visit south of Rosarito, near an old community called El Morro.
Previously, local fishermen placed flowers at a small cross at the mountain summit during a local holiday or during Easter Week. Today, the symbol of their faith reaches into the heavens for everyone to see. http://photos.signonsandiego.com/album114

I am not a fan of this one.

This is the line at the last toll station on Hwy 1 just north of Ensenada. We waited in line for 45 minutes. There was a military inspection post just before you entered the toll lanes. Slowed things down a bit.

Business is booming for our friend who owns this mini market south of Maneadero. So.....who knows maybe Baja won't be hurt BUT don't count on it. 'They' say, "...when the United States gets a stomach ache Mexico gets Montezuma's Revenge!!!"

Our friends, Maria and Meli, standing in front of their restaurant, DONEY in Mulege. They are great hosts and they accomodate our caravans very professionally. The food is excellent. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. We have watched it grow from a small restaurant that served food out of the window to a nice 'sit-down' eating establishment. When you visit Mulege, BCS, Mexico, we highly recommend that you eat at their restaurant.

Finally rounded up the necessary road funds and headed south. It wasn't easy saying goodbye to Sara and Lobo for a month but they'll be down for the 4th of July. There's a little swell pouring in and I'm heading out to catch some low tide second point zippers with OT and Mateo and Brittany. Stoked to be back in the enchanted dust bowl that is San Juanico.

I'm having major issues with upload speed. I'll get back to you all with some photos. I'll have to call Starband and see what's up. I hope tech support can help.

Well, Norbert looked promising as far as creating a good swell, which it did for just a few hours early in the day on Oct. 11, 2008.

Even though the swell was almost gone by 2:00 p.m. Dustin still got some good waves.

When we got back from the U.S.A., the end of Sept., we were welcomed by some very dense desert growth.

.......and our second litter of feral kitties. We have got to get momma kitty fixed. No vet. in town, so it will be a challenge.

.....AND these big, jie-hugic (a Blair-ism), enormous (about a 8" to 10" wing span) MOTHS! They seem to be harmless, but, the locals say that they are poisonous, guess I'll have to check into that.

The tropical weather brought some great clouds to San Juanico. This is our view of the bay and town from our little 'briar-patch'.

Point Surf Baja -'...a work in progress.'

Thanks, Greg it is a great addition to our .....'work in progress'.

We got the pillars in so we can go up a second floor. Until that happens they will be used in our temporary shade project.

Dustin's friend Steve, came down from New Mexico to surf and of course had the Baja experience of having his van break down on him on the north road. Luckily he was able to hike to a ranch and get a message, via marine radio, to Dustin to come and help him out. Which he did and they were able to tow his van, thanks to Eric for the truck, back to San Ignacio for repairs. After his time in San Juanico, Dustin took him to San Ignacio, where his van was waiting for him, all fixed and ready to go. Isn't it amazing.....that in the middle of ......nowhere you can breakdown, get help, and get your vehicle fixed under $200.USD. That's what we love about BAJA!

"The LONG and winding road......." The road has been widened in several places south of El Rosario, YIPPEE!!!

Lake Chapala......yes, that is water in it, not a mirage.

My sister, Debbe and I followed John on this trip down. This is on Hwy 1 in San Ignacio. It is still unbelievably GREEN down there!
Debbe helped me drive our 'new' 4 Runner down. She was such a help and we have so much fun on our road-trips. Especially when we can stop and take photos!

We left San Juanico via the 'south road' on Sunday Aug. 31. We were on our way to help out our friends in Mulege. Their home was flooded by 4' of water on the Mulege River. The south road had a few wash-outs, but it was still passable. In all our years of traveling to San Juanico we have never seen this road washed out in these places. Amazing.

Life-flight lands in San Juanico

On Wed. Aug. 27, 2008 we were amazed to first, hear, then see a helicopter circle and land in the valley just below us.

The whole town came out to see 'WAAZZAPPENIN' in San Juanico!

John talked with the local pharmacist and found out that her elderly mother needed to be taken to the hospital in Cd. Constitucion due to an emergency. The helicopter had C.F.E. on it so it doubled as 'life-flight' and delivery vehicle. It brought the town a part so that the electricity could be started up again after 3 days without it.

Thanks to a local contractor, Eric Oldberg, a detour around the massive wash-out on the main highway south of town, was created. He used his tractor and retrieved 2 of the culverts and created this earthen bridge. Thanks! Eric!!

The Morning After......Tropical Storm leaves his mark on San Juanico!

We were amazed by the amount of rain that fell on our little part of the world.

WOW! This rainbow after Julio, arched over San Juanico, even turning into 2 rainbows!The truck has never been sooooo CLEAN! Thank you Julio.

Well, the new road going south out of San Juanico washed away. Our local police force were coming back to town after a trip south. Before they attempted to cross the river, the road was still in tact, officer Tito got out and started walking on the highway over the culverts, the story is that as he walked the road started to come apart and wash away. Fortunately, he got to the other side before it washed completely away. Unfortunately, the commandante didn't make it across. He spent 3 days in his truck waiting for the water to subside.

A 'life-line' was set up in order to get food and water to the commandante.

The Panga Beach was completely rearranged. We understand that a few of the fisherman's pangas were washed out to sea.

John & I decided to spend the afternoon at the beach on Aug. 24, 2008. So, we set up our 'Easy-Up' brought out the cooler, lounge chairs and books and settled in for a relaxing afternoon on the beach!
(We didn't realize that there was a 'tropical storm' brewing.)

We were captivated by the amazing storm clouds!

Wow! that looks like a GIANT wave in the sky!!

Hmm.....maybe we should paddle in?.....NAH!

Oh Oh....Looks pretty ominous!!

"What do ya think?.......should we go in?........Nah."

The birds we 'high-tailing' it to shore. The locals all ran for shore and left the beach. John and fellow surfer FINALLY decided to come in. We almost lost our 'Easy-Up' , if not for the help of a kind local it would have sailed up the cliff. As John came in, the wind gusted and tore his board out of his arm, and it flew down the beach (luckily he was able to retrieve it). We got the 'Easy-up' down as we were pelted by rain, falling horizontally and high-tailed it up to our place on the hill. Whew!

On our trip home we encounter the 'vine' that ate Mulege! This vine is taking over our friends house in Mulege. They thought the had killed it when they killed some weeds, but, I guess not! Hopefully their gardener has gotten it under control.

On our last trip north we were able to have a bar-b-que with some of our family at the beach in Cardiff, CA. Following are some photos of the fun evening.

Monday is our day off, so we spent the day exploring San Juanico and of course surfing. We had dinner at Socorro's Taco Diamar Restaurant Mmmmm MMMM Good. The best fish tacos and 'carne' tacos in San Juanico.

The horses arrived from La Purisima on Fri. Jun 27. The vaqueros (cowboys) road them over from La Purisima, approx. 35 miles due east of San Juanico.

We were entertained by the singers. Authentic Banda music, it was great!

All of the dancers were amazing. The 'break-dancer' blew everyone away! We went home after the entertainment.....but found out that the party went on until the wee hours of the morning.

Sneaky John arranged with Giulia a romantic evening. Giulia was our chef and she fixed the most fantastic gourmet dinner we have ever had, anywhere. It was amazing. Thanks Giulia!

More Pavement! Yea! the main road into Loreto is being improved.
It's kind of a mess right now. This work is being done in front of the Pescadero grocery store . It looks like curb & gutter going in. Kinda tricky maneuvering the LONG trailer through here.Loreto Shores RV Park was a sight for sore eyes, bottoms, & nerves. The new pool was very refreshing. We were glad & lucky we stopped here for the night because while we were enjoying our time in the pool a friend told us that we had a flat tire on the truck. At least it happened after we had parked the trailer. SO....we pumped it up and headed out to the taller de llantas across the street from the Hacienda Hotel and got it fixed. SOOOO glad it did't BLOW out on us on the road.

The BEST tamales in Baja California Sur, according to John, Dustin and numerous Baja travelers. Famosa Carmelita is in Jesus Maria, a little town just north of Guerrero Negro. (Muchos TOPES in this town!)

We left Temecula, CA on June 17 for our return trip to San Juanico. Here we are at Estero Beach a great RV park in Ensenada. As you can see we are towing a LONG trailer. This will be the Treto's new home in San Juanico.
Well, we made it as far south as San Quintin on our second day of the journey. We had to have an electrical glitch fixed so we could have running lights on the trailer. Jose' from 'Auto Electrico-El Corto' in So. San Quintin, fixed us up in no time.
Are we there yet? Lot's of road work being done on Hwy 1. This is just south of El Rosario. It looks like they are widening this part of the road and smoothing out some of the 'curvas peligrosas'.

Pizza night was enhanced by live music from some local artists and a guest. Mateo and Brittany and guest string tickler Andrew lit up the dining room with some electrifying surf inspired lyrics and a steady rhythm.

Their tunes seemed to conjure some oceanic stoke and Mateo scored a nice sundown carve.

Becky's scorpion

Becky got her annual scorpion sting. Same finger as the last one. This time John went to the clinic and the Doctor gave him a prescription for an injection. With the help of John and his great 'first-aid' and getting her to the Doc., Becky recovered much quicker this time.
El Alacran makes a great conversation piece. Becky put him in his place!

On our way to San Juanico we picked some provisions for the cafe.
Some folks stopped on their way out on the dirt road. Just a flat tire, they said they could handle it.
Ahhhh....THE paved road!
It was good to see 'main' street again.
Just a bit windy.

Our first harvest from our little garden on the hill.
John said that I should be in a picture with some of our harvest. These beets were so good. We had them for dinner, cooked al dente with a little butter, mmmm....mmmm....good.

On our last weekend in San Juanico we had pizza at Dan Alacran's Pizza . Hmmm mmmm GOOD! They are usually open on the weekends, it is well worth the wait. (We are currently in the states on a re-stocking expedition. We will be back in San Juanico the end of the month.)

Mother's Day in San Juanico

This fabulous sunset over the windmills set the mood for the festivities in town for Mother's Day. In San Juanico they celebrate Mother's Day on the 10th of May.
In town the Salon was hopping with the festivities. People come from all the surrounding areas to celebrate.
A raffle being held, not sure for what but everyone seemed to be having a great time.

The Sea Turtle Conservation Network of the Californias, is a grassroots network of individuals, communities, organizations and institution from around the world dedicated to the conservation and protection of sea turtles in Northwest Mexico. www.grupototuguero.org
We served breakfast to a group of conservationists from The Grupo Tortuguero, A Sea Turtle Revolution. San Juanico is one of the Loggerhead Conservation Communities. Loggerhead turtles migrate from Japan to feed within coastal fishing grounds off the Baja California Peninsula. The Grupo Tortuguero's work in partnership with fishermen and their families has shown that local fisheries are a leading source of loggerhead mortality in the Pacific and that the future of these turtles is largely in the hands of small-scale fishers in Mahia Magdalena, Isla San Lazaro, Puerto Lopes Mateos, Santa rosa, Santo Domingo, La Poza Grands, Las Barrancas, Punta Abreojos and San Juanico.

Judy and Clare Juhl, dear friends of John & Becky, visited from Mulege. Judy is collecting wall art and shows her latest find. They were very impressed with San Juanico and the miles and miles of beautiful beaches that surround Bahia San Juanico.

Gary & Spike came by to check us out. They moored Gary's sailboat in the bay to rest and get ready to sail north.
The S.V. Sparkle built by hand by Gary K. Webb. It must be a very sea worthy vessel, Gary has sailed it many times, by himself, from Ensenada to La Paz.

Dustin enjoying a fun day at 2nd point before he had to go back to reality (U.S.A). He is going to go back to San Marcos, CA to see his wife and work for 3 weeks. He will return to San Juanico the first week in June. We look forward to his coming back down, he is such an asset to Point Surf Baja because of his innovative ideas and his way with people. We miss him.
